Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Few More Details on found '69/'70 tapes

Yesterday, David Lemieux called into Sirius/XM's Grateful Dead Channel's "Tales from the Golden Road" call-in show hosted by David Gans and Gary Lambert.

In addition to promoting Dave's Picks #5 and the Dave's Picks 2013 subscription, he mentioned again that the Vault had received a bunch of reels from late '69/early '70. Specifically, he said that these reels were turned into him from a family member of someone who worked for the band. There were about 15-16 reels that contained about 10 hours of uncirculated music for which, in many cases, no set list had been known. He said that they were surprised by the quality of the tapes and the music. He said that these tapes bridge the gap between November '69 and February '70. It seemed that this wasn't strictly defined, but that most of the tapes were from this time frame. In the conversation with Gans, Lemieux mentioned that these tapes contain at least one Dark Star of great quality that musically was between the psychedelic '69 Dark Stars and the melodic(Feelin' Groovy)'70 Dark Stars.

Finally, Lemieux said that this material could be fodder for a Dave's Picks 6 or 7 with potentially Dave's Pick's 2013 subscription bonus disc.

The podcast for the show is in the link. Lemieux calls in about 1 hour 3 minutes into the show.

IMO, the rest of 2/2/70 would be a welcome addition to the vault.

Good to hear more info. It sounds like some of Bear's reels that went astray. Some of these would be the missing reels for shows that we've had incomplete - but it sounds like some may be from shows we don't know about at all. I'm always excited to hear about a newly-discovered Dark Star! (Just to speculate, I wonder if this is the Star that's on the missing reel from 12/20/69.)

My fondest hope!

After a listen - he does confirm that in 3 or 4 cases, the reels complete shows that we had incomplete. I'm wondering which are the shows from Nov '69-Feb '70 where we don't know setlists - there are a few, actually.
They actually got these reels back in July, but have been too busy with releases to start going through them until now (he says). But he sounds very eager to get something released from this batch.
And he did mention a great, unheard Dark Star from late '69. This perked up Gans, who says he's listening to all the Dark Stars chronologically to write a Dark Star essay in an upcoming book. (Which of course, perked up my ears...)

More speculation from me. I'll put $10 on the new reels completing the following shows:

10 December (as you said)
20 + 21 December - 20 appears to be missing a Dark Star. Both of these look glaringly short.
5 and 7 Feb - Could give us a complete Feb Fillmore West run
11 Feb (early) - Could give us a complete Feb Fillmore East run (as suggested by the Black Peter on 30 Days Of Dead)

I think it makes sense that they at least complete the California shows. That seems more likely than tapes from Hawaii or Texas.

...

OK, I just listened to the Sirius interview.

He says the Dark Star is from late '69, not Nov '69. I reckon it's the one apparently missing from 20 Dec.

He's very cryptic and seems to suggest at different times the missing tapes are from up to Feb '70 but then another suggests they come from March.

He might "not be a businessman" but he knows how to pique interest.
